Artist Justin Favela, his family, and the Ulrich crew hosted a free, all-ages celebration inspired by family gatherings from Favela’s youth. Justin Favela brought this tradition to life in a joyful community event at the museum.

Visitors sampled traditional Mexican food by Las Delicias, created flower crowns and mini piñatas, and enjoyed a performance by Raíces De Mi Tierra Ballet Folklorico. They also played games and danced to music with DJ Ash Aranda. Students from Wichita East offered aguas frescas while raising donations. A series of piñatas were broken during the party!

This was a great opportunity to experience Everything Must Go: Justin Favela's Closeout Blowout Re-Grand Opening, an installation composed of more than one hundred piñatas, each representing an exhibition from Favela's career. Surrounding them were vibrant dreamscape murals that visualized the artist's hopes, future, and internal landscapes. The exhibition was on view in the Beren Gallery during Family Fiesta.

Family Fiesta is a celebration with Justin Favela and his family! In this ongoing series of performances, the public is encouraged to participate in the celebration firsthand by enjoying food, drinks, music, games and piñata time. The events are taken out of the traditional context of park outings or backyard cookouts and performed in unconventional locations challenging people's expectations of a fiesta, and at the same time, dismantling notions of place and institutional inclusion.
